<image:title>Copy of Hispanic Identity Project - Copy of Rachel</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachel is the result of an egg donation from a Puerto Rican woman. She is 50 percent Puerto Rican and has embraced this part of her identity in her own life. She know studies family and has traveled to Puerto Rico. Her parents are jewish and of Italian-American descent. Critical question: What is Hispanic? Genetics or culture? How do those things mix? I remember this so vividly was my girl scout leader growing up for year and years and there was this one girl my age and her mom who was also, she was the co leader, actually and she was pretty conservative greek um big greek community where I’m from and she basically told me that we were doing a potluck in fact and I think brought hispan puerto rican food from this restaurant from downtown chicago right? and I was so excited to tell me story in front of everyone and it made her so uncomfortable. It made this mom so uncomfortable that I was talking about this egg donor and kind of the science behind it and she told me in front of everyone maybe it's not true maybe it's a mistake maybe you're not actually form the egg donor maybe you're actually from your mom's egg because it made her more comfortable because she kind of didn't like the idea of the science involved that I was kind of different. I don't really know what made me uncomfortable but that totally struck a cord with me and that left me so angry cuz it's like you're denying what I am and I mean even through high school, had people telling me "you're just saying that to put it on a college resume" you're just saying that to say you're different. LIke you look white. like what do you mean you don't even speak spanish. Like all of this random stuff. That was so hard hearing because it's like NO, that's my identity, you know?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Maria was born in Ecuador and moved to the United States with her parents at the age of 5. She an advocate in the community for social change and justice in the Latinx community and identifies as being queer. “Being a queer woman of color has opened me up to a beautiful, intellectual community of people who face similar struggles as me. Being Latino [in America], you are always conflicted between two different things--because you are in America, you are not fully in your Latino community, and you are not fully American or white. You are always in between two [communities], you are navigating two different things. And the same in being bisexual, you are navigating between two different preferences. Like do I want to date a man? Do I want to date a woman? So, for me, anyway, those two things are constantly in conflict. I am always in this in-between with everything I am. That is just who I am. In terms of geography, I'm from New York so I identify heavily with New York, but I am in Ohio right now and I have to be in the community here. There are a lot of places in my identity where I am in the in-between, so it has been a lot to traverse—sort of figuring out where I am, how I am going to navigate this constant journey between different places, different identities, different ideas. But, in the end, it’s beautiful. And I just feel very fluid, which is great because as much as I love having an identity, I just love to fluidly be in between...and I’m this and I’m that. But I don’t always have to identify.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rachel was conceived with the help of an egg donation from an anonymous Puerto Rican woman. She has embraced this part of her identity in her own life by attempting to learn more about her culture. She is minoring in Spanish and has traveled to Puerto Rico. Her parents are of Jewish and of Italian-American descent. “I've actually been thinking recently, just because of the political state of the country and a lot of stuff like that, [that] it's a really interesting position I'm put in because they talk a lot about allies right now. You know if you're going to stand up for women's rights, you have to stand up for trans rights and everything. You can't just pick and choose what you want to be a part of and so [it is] kind of the whole thing about [saying] “Yes, I'm Hispanic” but because I'm white, and I don't look Hispanic, I'm not being affected by the stereotypes and the political climate towards Hispanics. So that's kind of what I've been dealing with. Not really guilt, but how I can help, or how can I feel apart of this when people look at me [and] I look white, I look separated from the problem.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hispanic Identity Project</image:title>
<image:caption>Cassandra's parents are from Puerto Rico and moved to the mainland United States when her father was recruited to work at the Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio. She is a Computer Science & Engineering major at Ohio State. Cassandra was born with the condition Albinism, which she attributes to influencing her experience in the American and Puerto Rican communities. “‘It’s hard having an obvious disability because people do make assumptions and people do get kind of weird about it. [They say things like] “OMG you can't see as normally as everyone else.” But that is just part of it. It is weird because I speak Spanish, I am fluent in Spanish, but even when I go to Puerto Rico, people look at me really weird and I know they are talking about me because I can understand them. So, sometimes I just slip in a couple words and they are like “Oh no, she knows what I am saying.” People just assume that I am white, because I look white, because of the pigmentation of my skin, so it's really weird because I haven't really faced any racial or ethnic discrimination. So while my brother was bullied in middle school, people were telling him to go back to his country, which is ironic just because we’re already there. We’ve (Puerto Ricans) been US citizens for years and years and years. That really made him feel isolated, which is why I think he looked for that community, but I never had that [experience] because other white people also assumed I was white. Then again, I have never been able to connect with a lot of people based on my heritage. I have my family, of course, and a lot of people with my same condition, we talk about that. Other people from India, different countries, we all get it-- we don’t look like the people of our skin color and then they (people) kind of make assumptions. It’s really sad because I would like to connect with people of my heritage, but it's what is ingrained in people’s minds, that you have to look a certain way to be Hispanic.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Gretchen’s father is black and half Dominican, half Puerto Rican. Her mother is white and Puerto Rican. ‘"I grew up in North Carolina and I felt like a white kid. Everyone around me was a white kid, all my friends were white kids. People would ask me if I was mixed and I was like "No, that’s silly." All my life. When I was younger, I was a white kid. No one had curly hair like me, but I was white just like everyone else. [But], every person of color has a moment when they realize they are not white. They all have that one day, where something happens in class and you look around and you [realize] “I am not like the people around me.” Everyone has their idea of what we look like and if don’t look like that, then we aren’t Hispanic. People will say stuff about Hispanics not knowing that there could be about 8 of us in the room at any given moment. Especially in America, people see Mexicans and think that’s what Hispanics look like, [that] all Hispanics look like that. That’s not at all true. Puerto Ricans look just as varied as you and me do. Puerto Ricans look like everything under the sun. When I was younger, other [North Carolina kids] would be like “Speak spanish.” Then when I wouldn’t speak Spanish, I wouldn’t want to because my Spanish isn’t good. I very rarely speak Spanish in public. Taking spanish was really uncomfortable because I was one of the worst speakers in my class and I was the only Hispanic. I was terrible about it. There is nothing as polarizing as not being able to speak to your own family, for your great grandfather to be sitting in the room, telling you things and being able to understand him. I can not speak to an entire half of my family. It’s really embarrassing. I have been having trouble getting into Hispanic spaces because everyone feels comfortable speaking Spanish and I don’t want to force them to speak English again. When this is your place to speak how you want. I can’t find a space where I am allowed to be bad at Spanish and still be allowed to speak Spanish.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Gabriela’s mother is Puerto Rican, her father is of Italian and Irish descent. “‘It is very easy for me to pass as being completely white or completely non-Hispanic. Or a lot of people assume like “Oh, you’re white”, but anytime I am out with my mom, whether we are at the store, or I don't know, just when I am with her in general, she is always like listening to latin music and she speaks with an accent. I am definitely more aware of it then. Because if I just go out to the store and it’s just me, I don't get glances or anything, but if I go out to the store with my mom and we are like talking in Spanish then, in that case, yes, we will get glances. I will say that other than that, I grew up in a very homogeneous area, that obviously contributes to the fact that it was harder to identify with that [being Hispanic] or find outlets to express that, but also when I did tell people, “Oh, I am Hispanic” or “Oh, I am Latina”, people would always be like “Oh, you’re not Latina, you’re white” because they didn’t know any better and they had never seen a white Hispanic person. So I guess, in addition to growing up in a really homogenized area, that also sort of contributed to me maybe being more hesitant when embracing that side of my identity. Because anytime I did do it, people would just immediately invalidate me. I think with the way most Latinos are portrayed in the media in the United States, most of what we see is people with this perfect flowing brown skin. When people think of Hispanic people in the United States, the immediate things people think of are Sofia Vergara and Shakira, and they don’t even realize that there are Asian Latinos and Afro-Latinos and so there's more than just that and you can even be 100 percent Hispanic or 100 percent Latino and because of of the complex history of colonization, you can be lots of different identities.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Laura moved from Colombia to the United States at the age of 5. She grew up going back to visit her family in Colombia every summer with her mother. The town in New Jersey where she is from is predominately Hispanic. She studies political science at Ohio State. "I am very americanized. I know a lot of Hispanic people from those [Hispanic] countries. All my friends are americanized Hispanics. I am still super Hispanic. I just know how to be both. I am both. That's who I am. I try to integrate both parts of each culture into being a better me. I am both, I am not one or the other. [When asked if her background influenced her decision to study political science] Yeah, especially now, with Trump cracking down on immigration. I have family in the states who are not legal. My Tia works in a factory in the city, and literally last week half the staff had to run out because someone tipped them off that immigration was coming. Because, for me, that’s my mom’s only sister. I am a citizen and so are my parents, because we came at a time when it was easy to get citizenship, but now with everything that is happening, with the new administration and such, it’s just harder for her now that she's trying to make a better life for her family. She's scared to go to work because she doesn’t want to get deported. Then my mom would lose her sister. My parents aren’t together anymore. My mom doesn’t have anyone besides me and my brother, and i'm in college, in Ohio. My brother’s about to graduate high school. It definitely has an impact on what I want to do. It’s all a perspective thing. If they [others] were in my shoes, they would have a different perspective than if they grew up in Westerville, OH their whole lives. The best thing for people our age is to reach out and explain and talk as opposed to what I think has been [happening]. There's this really big divide of people not conversing which is a bad thing, we need to all understand each other to get on the same level.”</image:caption>

I don’t always feel that I have the right to check Hispanic on the boxes, sometimes because I am like “hm, i don't know”. But at the same time, I think about it, it does count, I am part of it. Even if it’s not my full culture, it’s definitely a part of it, like when I go to family reunions or go to weddings or visit my grandmother who lives in Alabama. So, it’s definitely there and it's definitely important and seeing the pictures and hearing the stories, all this time growing up, and eating fried plantains, it DOES matter.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Frances was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the United States with her parents when she was three years old. The rest of her family still live in Puerto Rico, so she visits at least once a year. "'I mean, I would say that my identity probably shapes how different people see me, because there are a lot of people that kind of assume I am white or they know I am Hispanic, but I am white Hispanic, when Puerto Ricans are really like Native [American], African, and white. Literally everything. And then when they learn that I am part African or part Native American, they kind of shift the way they see me. And I kind of get that “Ooohhhh, like you’re not what I thought you were” [kind of reaction]. I think people try really hard to just check off boxes, and so they want to be able to label you easily. “Oh, you’re Puerto Rican or White, and that’s it.” And so when I say that “Oh, no I am actually mixed race,” then that gets more complicated for them and then it's just harder for them to understand. Especially, I found with Afrolatinx culture, people don’t quite understand that you can be black and Hispanic. When I tell them that I am part black, they are like “How does that work?” Because they are like “You don’t look black and you’re also Hispanic, none of this is making sense.” Identity and culture is like this huge conglomeration of everything, not just a box you can check off. I feel like there is a little bit of tension between the Hispanics don’t speak Spanish, those who grew up in the states, and those who may have moved here at a young age or who moved here recently who do speak Spanish, so I feel like there's still that kind of little divide. So sometimes at LSA (Latino Student Association) meetings, I’ve tried to talk to people in Spanish and they are like “No, my Spanish isn’t that great” or some people just prefer English, so I feel like that’s still an adjustment. Growing up, at least in my family, my parents always emphasized, “You are Hispanic, you need to speak Spanish.” They always spoke Spanish in the house, so I think at a young age, I always thought, “If you’re Hispanic, you have to speak Spanish.” I think as I have meet different people who identify as Hispanic and don’t speak Spanish, I have been trying to change that way of thinking and be like “Okay, they have Hispanic descent, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they speak Spanish, maybe they were just raised in a different household” or I know there are some Latinos who don’t teach their kids Spanish because they think it will make it easier to fit into society. So I am trying to understand those different perspectives."'</image:caption>

As the crew was about to return to Cuba, he hopped off the plane and applied for a green card at the embassy. There, in Austria, Sebastian’s father met Sebastian's mother, who is German. They eventually moved to the United States together. Sebastian has both German and American citizenship and speaks both Spanish and German. He has two half-sisters who still reside in Cuba, and he plans to visit in the near future. He is also still connected to his German family and has visited them several times. '“I didn't ever perceive my race as having a huge effect on me up until recently, having lived in a diverse and welcoming city before college (Richmond, Virginia). However, since coming to Columbus, I have very quickly come to realize how prevalent discrimination still is in the United States, and have been challenged by widespread ignorance towards minorities in this country. I think the biggest challenge I have faced here [at Ohio State] is that it is really hard to have discussions about race without seeming like you are victimizing yourself. It is really hard to even approach talking to someone about how being a brown kid affects how people see you right off that bat. I didn't really care about this when I lived in Richmond, but that has still been a part of my life always, you know. It is really hard to identify that and express that sentiment to people who have never experienced that before without them being like “You are just being sensitive.”'</image:caption>

<image:caption>Samantha’s mother is Puerto Rican. Samantha is a pre-med student at Ohio State. [On how she feels about not speaking Spanish] “‘I even get sad about it sometimes, but I understand it--my mom doesn’t speak very good Spanish. [She also grew up here] and she was the only sibling whose first language was English, maybe that has something to do with it, but my grandparents both immigrated here from Puerto Rico, and then every other sibling’s first language was Spanish except for my mom. They grew up in the Bronx, so they didn’t have the best Spanish to begin with. She worked in the police department and in her precinct there were a lot of Dominicans so even she will say words that even her family members are like “what words are those?.” [It’s] just a different dialect. So I think she was embarrassed to teach me Spanish, she just didn’t trust herself to. I feel like I have missed out on it, because you know, even if I become fluent later in life, it’s harder to become fluent, and I know I am going to have an accent, you know? I just know it’s not going to be all there. [In regards to whether she plans to teach her own family Spanish] I definitely do. But then, I don’t know how much Spanish I could give them, so maybe I would have to give them like tutors or something. I would like to. I want them to have that feeling that I didn’t have. *Hm* like it feels like belonging. Like “Yeah, I am a part of this.” And then you know sometimes, you know I go to a family gathering and they are all speaking Spanish. I get some of it because my mom does speak it around the house and just context clues but it’s like “Eh, you know?” and I can’t talk back and it's upsetting.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Marilyn’s father is from Cuba originally, her mother is an American. She is a biochemistry major at Ohio State. ‘“It's hard to really have an identity when everyone is telling you that this is what you are not. I don’t think I said anything back then because I just kind of accepted the fact that I wasn’t really accepted in either culture. So, it’s like I am not really in with the white people, I am not really in with the Hispanic people because, you know, I don’t speak it [perfectly], or this, that or the other, so I was just kind of in between. I guess there still is a culture of racism. A lot of people will talk to me as if I didn’t have any identifying features of any minority population and, you know, sometimes they say really derogatory things so I guess I do identify with Hispanic people in a sense. When they say things like this I do have to really shut them down, because I am like, even though this isn’t me, this is my family, my people work these same type of jobs, and they don't speak English perfectly, and it’s not fair for you to think of them in this way, so I guess it has kind of shaped my perspective about people? People who are ignorant. So I see where this person (who is critiquing Hispanics) is coming from, like that’s all you really know about Hispanic people, but there is also a whole richness in culture about hard work. That was definitely a topic that was forced into me “You must work hard. There is no laziness.” because you know that's how we (cubans) have become successful. We keep those hard working values and we just power through.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Maria’s parents are from Chile. She was born in Connecticut but moved to Ecuador between the ages of 2 and 4. She later moved back to The United States and lived in several different states before finally moving to Ohio. Maria is still very connected to her family in Chile and visits once a year. In the future, Maria hopes to practice medicine in a Spanish-speaking country. “‘I do think it [the Hispanic label] minimizes our differences a lot. Like I feel like Spaniards are in a very different world than South or Central Americans, and even South and Central America are very different. Central America has a lot more indigenous people, or more of those roots, and there is more poverty. South America got more colonized. Like Chileans, I guess I could be considered the norm of what they look like, but I have cousins that have blond hair and blue eyes. There is just Italian influence and German influence, especially where my family is, and that is how Argentina is as well--light skin, blue eyes and no one would think that is Hispanic. Even like black Hispanics are marginalized. Even in their country of origin. The last time we went, we went in December and my uncle was like, “There are so many immigrants right now, there are so many black people coming in” and I was like “yeah, they make up [a large percentage of Latin America], they are from Colombia and a lot of places like that area. But the differences are minimized, and therefore people don’t realize that it covers a wide array of people that make up the Hispanic culture.”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nico is a first-generation Hispanic in the mainland United States. She is originally from Puerto Rico and moved to Indiana in 2012 before coming to Ohio for college. [on her racially-mixed background] “‘Several years ago, they traced back my dad’s background and it is heavily Spanish because it is where all the sugar plantations were when the Spaniards settled in. My mom is actually Afro-Hispanic, so she’s from an area that is heavily concentrated with African culture. She knows how to do rituals in Santeria and stuff. They met in the center of the island, but it was frowned upon for them to get together because she is black and he is extremely white. But, everyone in there is some sort of mix. If you see my dad, he has this noticeably African nose, but he is completely white. So, there is a lot of discrimination, everyone is mixed but we are going to be racist to this one group [kind of attitude]. I moved here in 2012 and it is kind of weird being first generation in America; your parents don’t know anything about what you are supposed to be doing because it is totally different over here.”’ [I know you talked a lot about colorism as in Puerto Rican. Do you identify as being part of the black community or not really? What has been your experience with that?] “I have tried, but look at me--I am kind of yellow and have extremely straight hair...Over here, I have not gotten so into the black community because I don’t know how Afro-Hispanic is treated here--Is it black? Or is it just Hispanic? I also think it is also based a lot on culture because the culture here is not the same culture that black people have in Puerto Rico. They have similar situations, we have some food and we have some connections back to our African origins, but since Puerto is the place where they brought all the slaves, that culture is more persevered over there [more] than it is here.” [What do you think about the whole label--Hispanic or Latino? Do you identify with people who are from different Spanish-speaking or Latin counties? Do you identify more with the Puerto Rican label or more so with just that idea of speaking Spanish?] “So that is a weird thing as a Puerto Rican because it depends on who you ask. There is this whole group who wants to be a state and they are like “No, we are not Hispanics. We are Puerto Ricans and we are United States citizens.” But, for me, I don’t belong to that group. I do think I am Puerto Rican but I also think I am Hispanic and I am part of Latino America. I found that within the Latino community, maybe we don’t have the same struggles, but we look out for each other because we are basically just summed up into one group according to the politics over here, so we might as well be there for each other.” [Do you think there is almost a greater sense of unity among Hispanics in the United States because of discrimination? Because of how people are lumping us together?] “When you go to Latin America itself you find that there is a lot of like, not wars, but fights between countries, like this country is dissing people from this country. One example is Puerto Ricans just say mean jokes about Dominicans and I have met some Dominican people that are amazing. Even between Puerto Rico and here, I think the discrimination was stronger over here. When I came over here, it is like you are separated from that context and that is just a person who speaks Spanish and I think that since we all grouped into one group over here, it enables you to see that “oh, that person is just as discriminated against or is just equal to me.”</image:caption>

When he was younger, he also lived in Peru and Guatemala for short periods of time. His father works for the Embassy and his mother for the World Bank which he says contributed to his diverse upbringing, and the opportunity to know and meet individuals from around the globe. “I guess there were points where you feel the discrimination anywhere you go to be honest. You are going to meet people who are open to every culture, every type of person, and on the other hand of the spectrum, you are going to find some people who are just very close minded and they don’t have the tolerance that a lot of people have. It’s sad, you know? But it’s going to be harder time for them, than for us, to adapt to society. I think a benefit to being born in Colombia is that I am more open minded, I am open to all cultures. Eventually Cynthia’s mother moved back to Brazil and Cynthia rotated between living with her mother, in Brazil, and her father, in Ohio as she grew up. ‘“It (moving back and forth) taught me how to cope with change. I can be somewhere foreign in a day and say “okay well it feels like home now, we’re good.” I’m used to traveling and adapting to whatever. In my head, the worlds are so separate. I’m in no-man's-land. When I’m in the US I feel American, when I’m in Brazil, I feel Brazilian. I just feel like myself. You’re just completely different with the people, everything is so different. My mind really separated the two. I am not aware of my suffering of missing Brazil while I am here, and I am not aware of my suffering of missing the US [when I am in Brazil]. I’ve started to realize things about me that are very Brazillian. I am more affectionate and I am very open. I can talk about anything at all. That’s very Brazillian of me. But I never felt like I can’t be myself when I am here. It’s possible that I change while I am here, that I kind of adapt. So there are things about me that are very American, and people don’t expect that from me. I am very independent in the sense that I feel like I don’t need people and, in Brazil, families are very like close and miss each other all the time and I can’t stand that. They can defend themselves speaking English now, and for a period of time, I thought it was annoying. But, I think it helped me develop faster than all of my friends. They thought that they shouldn't really assimilate, and I am really glad they thought this, because that is how you lose culture. You know, one of things we pride ourselves upon is diversity and within diversity there needs to be separation. Diversity is great, but if we all assimilate…Its not just about pigment, it's about ideas and perceptions of what you think, what you believe, and your religious beliefs. Anything that falls under those categories. Essentially that is what it is. Identity is whatever is valid to you and, you know, that's how I view it. Hispanic can be in any shade. They can be. I am the darkest person in my family and, then we have a person that is very very fair skin. And that's my grandma. And, we are talking about two people born in Mexico, my grandfather is very much in the middle. Then there is me and that's the case…There is a whole succession of [skin tones] . So, for me, it is all about culture and ancestry I would say, I am Mexican and I am African American. I don’t want to shadow a side of my family. Even though my father wasn’t there, I don’t want to shadow that part of me.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Caroline’s father is Hispanic and her mother is white [from the United States]. Her father spent a lot of time teaching her, not only about the history and culture of Cuba, but about about the rest of South America. She feels that her father, and being Cuban, taught her how big the world is. [on her family’s immigration story and the changing attitudes towards Hispanic immigration] “‘Him [my father] and his family came over right after fidel became dictator. He was around three and they came over on a boat, their grandsons and their four sons. Like most Cubans, they went to Mexico first, and then Miami, Florida. And there was just such a different experience for Cubans coming into Miami at the time, because if you looked at the news then it was like “no these are really hard people trying to escape communism.” It is definitely not the similar language that follows Hispanics [now]. Even now, Cubans coming over, they don’t get that kind of praise. ... [on being Hispanic/Latino versus Cuban.] There used to be these signs in little Havana that were like “I am not an immigrant, I am refugee” because they were escaping communism and the attitude was I am not Latina, I am Hispanic, or I am Caribbean, so now it has kind of changed. Now, it’s like Cuba is part of Latin America, but, for a long time, they were pushing “we are from the Caribbean, not from Latin America” to kind of have that separate identity from the rest of the countries.”’ [Do you think they will ever go to Cuba?] “‘There is actually a Cuban birthright program, but you have to be 22, so I’d have to wait to go. It’s kind of controversial because a lot of Cuban-Americans think that if you go back while there is still this regime that you are kind of legitimizing the dictatorship, the regime. So I have had an uncle and cousin who went back and they had an awesome, incredible time and they got to see the old house that my grandparents lived in before they left. I know it was just really special, my uncle went back like 5 times, but other family members are very much like “nope, not until communism has fallen”. And it weird because you wouldn't think that if you are going to China that you would be supporting sweatshops and poor labor laws. I don't think you necessarily make that connection, so I think because tensions are still very deep in the Cuban community that we are still very sensitive to that”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Emyle grew up in Miami. Her father is originally from Honduras; her mother is Cuban. Emyle’s step-father, Leo, is from Venezuela, and Emyle identifies strongly with being Venezuelan. Leo exposed her to new aspects of the Hispanic culture and parts of her identity when she was growing up. She has spent time in Venezuela, and still has family in the country. In the future, Emyle plans to be an orthopedic surgeon. “‘I am grateful that I was able to explore my culture without having any restrictions. I think if I were born somewhere else [other than Miami], I don’t think I could have explored [my culture] as much...I have so much pride in my culture right now. In Miami, I felt mostly normal, like I was Hispanic. But when I go to Venezuela, I’m like “I’m not Hispanic”; I’m always like “No, there is no way.” Then, I go to places, like here (Columbus), where I am not American, and I feel like I can’t really relate. I can relate to them, but I become closer to my Hispanic side because I have more of a connection with them, if that makes sense. But, in these extreme settings, I don’t fit either way. I went a couple years back for my cousin's wedding, and I went to her party, the wedding reception. That was so uncomfortable. I can dance, but Venezuelan culture is very--they party a lot--so mind you the party started like at 5 pm in the evening, it stayed until 5 pm that [next] evening. They literally had a buffet of breakfast food. When I went to that party, I just felt SOO uncomfortable. I understood the conversation and stuff like that, but I just didn’t feel [Hispanic]. Mind you, I love my family, and they were having fun. But, we were not in a very intimate setting, and they threw me into this. People were asking me to dance, and it was fun, but I just didn’t feel Hispanic. I was sitting at a table, and I was [thinking] there is just so much of this culture, so much of MY culture, that I don’t feel that my mom has done enough justice [to]. And, not just my mom, but me, and trying to immerse myself in the culture, even though I couldn’t necessarily go to Cuba…”’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Caro’s parents are both from different parts of Colombia. The marriage between her father, who is from Barranquilla (a coastal, “party city”) and her mother, who is from Bucaramanga (a more mountainous, quite, and religious part of the country), was not accepted by everyone. Both of her parents studied medicine and moved to the United States after her father was offered a position at the Cleveland Clinic. Caro was born several years later. “I don't remember learning English, but I remember around 8 or 9 years old when I wanted to stop speaking Spanish and everyone was speaking English [to me] and my parents were like “Solamente Español” --you have to speak Spanish, you can’t forget it, and I didn't understand. [She responded] “No, all my friends speak English, English is like the language here, I don't want like have to speak in Spanish with you guys”...And my parents were like just trust us, speak Spanish, and of course now I thank them a million times over. So then I got into High School and there were a couple more Hispanic families in the area and that’s when I kind of realized: wow, speaking Spanish really is a blessing and I am so lucky that I have this talent. And so, I decided to take French even though everyone told me I should speak Spanish for the easy A. Everyone is like “take Spanish, it is easy”, and I’m like “no, French”. I wanted to reach out, and I realized I have a passion for languages. I have a French minor [now]. I love languages, I think they are beautiful. I love understanding different dialects, different syntaxes, and how the grammar has evolved. I realize that speaking Spanish really gave me that foundation, helped me find that passion for language, and I realize that we are kind of different in the fact that Hispanics kind of have that “calor humano”. [we are] more so interested in each other and a lot of people aren’t really like that.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nichole is Colombian with Spanish roots. Her father is from the state of Georgia and her mother grew up in Colombia. While she knows her family is of mixed ancestry, she doesn’t know the exact percentage of her lineage. She knows that a lot of Spaniards came over to Colombia during the French war and that her great-grandparents are from Spain. She grew up in Georgia, but has visited Colombia a couple of times. Much of her Hispanic side of the family has moved to the United States. Nichole is hoping to move to Spain in the future to learn Spanish. [On not speaking Spanish] ““My mom ended up moving to Georgia from Colombia and people there were pretty racist. They just didn't understand why she was coming to be with my dad because my dad just never really left the state--he was a very “Georgia boy” and he only went to Colombia like once and then met my mom and so everyone thought that my mom was like trying to get her citizenship. So, she started feeling attacked when she moved to Georgia. She started hating the culture of being Colombian...I am the younger sibling so she started the whole Spanish-English thing with my sister and then her preschool started complaining: “she’s speaking Spanish, we don’t get her, she needs to speak English only”. They didn’t want to make that “mistake” with me so they just spoke English with me, but she still did cultural things [with me], like with food. I always grew up with Colombian food, or Spanish food, but like I had to learn Salsa myself because my mom never taught be any of that. I think she is just kind of ashamed about how Americans see Colombians as, so she doesn’t really want us to be super Colombian, I guess. So my sister and I just kind of did our own research on Colombia. It’s still hard to find because when you type in Colombia on google, it comes up with [stuff like] cocaine and... all these criminals and what not, it's kind of hard to learn about the country. Hispanics are very open to new cultures. I could be wrong on that, but that was my family. They believe in learning all cultures and I find that really cool because I know a lot about everything. My mom always bought a new cookbook and we would like be Asian for like month and then we just went through every single type of food, so I am really experienced when it comes to food, [for example]. ”” [Nichole on how others perceive her looks] ““Oh yeah, I always get a laugh. They are just like “no, you are not”. I say “Yeah, I really am, I am literally half.” I say I look like my dad but my mom--she’s got the strong {Hispanic} features, deep set eyes, dark eyes, dark hair, her skin is a little bit darker, I don’t know, she looks very Colombian. And I do get really dark in the summer, so some people can start to see in the summer. They are like “How do you get so dark in the summer” and I am like “because I am half Colombian! {obvious tone of voice}. But my hair gets really light. When I was a baby, she [my mom] called me a negative baby. You know that filter that is like the negative filter, where it turns you really dark and your hair turns white. So, my mom always says that I look like that in the summer.””</image:caption>

<image:caption>Itzel was born in Brazil and moved to Mexico City when she was 3 years old. At the age of 9, her parents relocated to Ohio for her father’s job. Both of her parents grew up in Mexico. Although, her mother’s side of the family originally emigrated from Spain during WWII. Itzel has Brazilian, Mexican, Spanish, and American Citizenship. She thinks it’s wonderful to be open to all of those cultures. ““I grew up in a Mexican household, in a Mexican Family, so I definitely identify as Mexican. But, I also identify as American because I have been here for 10 years and you start to catch on to things. It’s weird because the culture is actually really different, so it’s hard because you don’t really feel like you’re 100% Mexican. But, you also don’t feel like you’re 100% American...I struggled with that a lot....I moved here in 2nd grade,[and from] 2nd to I think like 6th grade, I was so ashamed of being Mexican...But now I talk about being Mexican, it’s not something that I hide anymore. People don’t automatically know [that I’m Mexican] and they are really surprised when I tell them. I feel like I’ve gotten more sensitive over time about it. I think I get more sensitive about it because, at this age, you should be able to be a little bit more aware of stuff like that. When people are like “you don’t look Mexican” and it’s like ...how would you feel about [me saying] “you don’t look American”? It’s not how you look, you just are. [On colorism in Latin America] In Mexico, there is a lot of racism...I never experienced any of that and so, I think moving to the United States made me a better person because I always got complimented on skin color in Mexico. I thought that was the most normal thing ever. You don’t hear that here, you know? I became sort of a minority in the United States and I kind of experienced how it was from the other side, so I am a lot more aware of social problems...It’s honestly really upsetting because it Mexico it’s like you come from the same people, why do you hate each other? So it is really upsetting...I kind of understand [this happening in] the United States where they (Americans) are like “you have a completely different culture than me, you are completely different than me, and THIS is why I don’t like you”, you know?...it’s not right, but I see why [it happens] and in Mexico it is just like “you are slightly darker than me”. It’s integrated into the culture. So, for example, someone complimenting me on my skin, you know? Or, I remember, I went to the beach with my little cousin and she was putting on sunblock like crazy, and she’s ten, and she’s like “if grandma sees that I tan, she’s gonna kill me”… My aunt, she always just compliments us on our skin color. She’s like “I wish my daughter was more white”. It’s just not right. That’s a really normal thing and I think those kinds of things, transfer over. Your 10 year old cousin hears it and she feels bad about her skin color so she hates that part of her and she hates other people that are darker.””</image:caption>

<image:caption>Maekenzie’s father is a third generation Mexican-American. While she grew identifying as both Mexican and American, she has often felt disconnected from that side of her culture and has only recently begun to figure out what being biracial means to her. She didn’t grow up speaking Spanish, but has since taken classes in high school and college. “And, now I’m just starting to figure out what it means to be biracial and have that whole idea of White and Hispanic… It’s different because there is this idea of what your race is compared to culture and I think those are two different things. So, my culture is very much European...We don’t do Day of the Dead, we don't do like anything like that, or what you would consider maybe the mainstream, Hispanic culture. So that side of it, I know nothing about, and I think I can easily tell somebody that, but race-wise, ancestors wise, I can be like, I am half this [Hispanic]. In a way, when I talk to people...it's hard for me to be like “but I am”, because I can't back it up like facts. And, like I said, coming from the community I did, it was more, “prove yourself”, so beside my genetics, I can’t really prove that there is much else there [culturally].... I [also] think that’s one of things that comes with saying your biracial. As soon as you say you are biracial, you are expected to know both cultures. “”</image:caption>
